'We wilden gewoon spélen. Spelen was het allerbelangrijkst'. En gespeeld hebben ze: tussen 1963 en 1966 gaven The Beatles wereldwijd zo'n 250 concerten. Daarna werd de situatie onhoudbaar en legde de groep zich toe op baanbrekende studio-opnamen. In deze documentaire concentreert de Oscarwinnende regisseur Ron Howard zich op de liveconcerten van de groep. Zijn vangst van nieuwe concertbeelden met opgepoetst geluid is verbluffend en laat vooral zien hoe goed, ruig en opwindend The Beatles live zijn. Het ongekende spelplezier en het vakmanschap spatten er vanaf, en ook voor en na de concerten is goed te merken dat dit bandje er lol in heeft. Ze zijn geestig, vrolijk en onverschrokken als ze de pers te woord staan - alles wat hun publiek ook wil zijn.

Het eerste optreden van The Beatles bij 'The Ed Sullivan Show' in 1964 wordt door muziekhistorici en critici beschouwd als een van de belangrijkste momenten in de geschiedenis van muziek en televisie. Om die uitzending te gedenken worden in dit programma alle Beatles-classics gecoverd door een 'All-Star' line-up van onder anderen Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys & John Legend, Maroon 5, John Mayer & Keith Urban, Ed Sheeran, Katy Perry, Imagine Dragons, Dave Grohl & Jeff Lynne, Gary Clark Jr., Dave Grohl & Joe Walsh , Brad Paisley & Pharrell Williams, Eurythmics.
Tussen de optredens door zijn unieke beelden te zien uit 1964 en een interview van David Letterman met Ringo Starr en Paul McCartney.

Beatlesfans opgelet! De NTR zendt op zaterdag 7 juni twee lange documentaires uit over The Beatles op Nederland 3. Aanleiding: het roemruchte bezoek van The Beatles aan Nederland 50 jaar geleden, in hetzelfde jaar (1964) dat zij hun definitieve doorbraak maakten in The Ed Sullivan Show. In de aanloop naar deze Beatles-avond staat NPO Cultura van 31 mei t/m 6 juni extra stil bij The Beatles.

3Doc: Beatlemania
In het eerste deel van de uitzending Beatlemania gaat Leo Blokhuis op zoek naar de muzikale wortels van de beatbands uit Groot Brittannië. Wat was er in die jaren gaande in Liverpool? Hebben The Beatles in hun eentje de weg naar het succes geplaveid of speelden daar ook andere bands een rol in? Hoe is het hun verder vergaan?
Eric Burdon van The Animals, Mike Pender van The Searchers, leden van Procol Harum en The Merseybeats vertellen hun verhaal. Neil Sedaka verhaalt welke veranderingen Britse bands op de Amerikaanse popmuziek hadden. En David Crosby legt uit welke invloed The Beatles op zijn eigen carrière hebben gehad: popmuziek zou na The Beatles nooit meer hetzelfde zijn.
In het tweede deel van Beatlemania verschuift de aandacht naar het muzikale genie van The Beatles, met bijdragen van een keur aan Nederlandse popmuzikanten, onder wie Marike Jager, Bertolf, JB Meijers en Joël Bons (artistiek leider Nieuw Ensemble). Als fans van The Beatles leggen zij uit wat de Fab Four muzikaal zo bijzonder maakt. Als hommage aan The Beatles nemen zij in een boerderij een eigenzinnige cover op van 'Norwegian Wood'.

On the 50th anniversary of the famous 12-hour session at Abbey Road which resulted in the Beatles' iconic album Please Please Me, leading artists such as Stereophonics, Graham Coxon, Gabrielle Aplin, Joss Stone, Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze, Paul Carrack, Mick Hucknall and I Am Kloot attempt to record the same songs, in the same timescale, in the same studio.
The results are captured in this programme, presented by Stuart Maconie.
Amongst those paying their own tribute to the album's success are Burt Bacharach and Guy Chambers, as well as people lucky enough to have been there 50 years ago telling the remarkable story of what happened that day, including engineer Richard Langham and Beatles' press officer Tony Barrow.
