Begin jaren ‘80 kampte Nederland met hardnekkige stagnatie en een knagend gevoel van malaise. Hele industrieën werden van de kaart geveegd, de werkloosheid steeg even hard als de huizenprijzen daalden en een jonge generatie staarde in het zwarte gat van ‘no future’.
